ALMERIA – LOCAL and National Police are investigating a fire which burned 10,000m2 of canes near Almeria University. Surrounding roads had to be closed for several hours due to the size of the flames and the smoke could be seen in the whole of the Retamar area.
It took several hours for firemen to extinguish the blaze, mainly due to strong winds, and they continued to dampen down the area until the following day.
It appears that the fire was started intentionally, although police believe it was not through malice or vandalism, and was probably a bonfire which got out of hand.
