CALPE Town Hall has awarded the contract for the construction of a pedestrian walkway across the town’s salinas area which will be accessible even during wet weather. The works are estimated to cost some €159,000. The path is intended for use by pedestrians to view the natural beauty of the salt flats environment and especially as a view point for observing the birdlife.
Given the ecological importance and sensitivity of the salinas’ environment the approach taken to the proposed works is especially tailored to avoid damage. No heavy machinery can be used to renovate and improve the current track that runs between scattered trees and shrubs.
It is hoped to construct a pedestrian bridge 2m wide to lead from the public footpath adjoining the wetland into its very centre. The initial access will consist of path of 64 m in length and continue as a catwalk for a further 150m.
The project also provides for the construction of a camouflaged lookout area of birds so as not to interfere with the habitat, and the construction of a walkway 4 metres wide for vehicles for maintenance purposes, and the construction of an entrance area alongside the road.
The works will be adapted to the existing landscape, paying special attention to the environmental impact.
The planned structures will be built with materials so as to blend in with the current environment.
The lighting of the gateways will be via bright beacons not more than a metre in height and the catwalk will have a handrail fashioned in stainless steel or wood.
